I am a complete n00b to competitive gaming. I am pretty good on pubs, maintaining a respectable kdr even on poor teams. Generally, I manage this by shooting people who do not know where I am or before they expect me. This gives me a huge advantage because I can line up my shot or they simply are not ready to fire when I pull the trigger.
This tactic does not work well in CAL scrims. This mostly occurs because the opponents are aware of potential rushes and do not get caught off guard or I am left to securing a particular area, so they are looking for me anyway. Basically, I am a very average shooter when I do not use other elements to gain the advantage. If I get caught in a close range 1 v 1 with an AK, I still wind up spraying for my life and this is even magnified further because I have limited knowledge of CAL maps.
Any suggestions on how to improve? I have tried to do more awp server so that I can patrol with that weapon more effectively. I would like to figure out how to win more one on one standoffs versus capable opponents without relying on luck.

If you can help it, don't spray, do bursts.
If you must spray, however, do it. But at least know the spray pattern of that gun so that you can control the spray and hit your target(s) with the spray.
If you're on a 1 v 1 situation, use cover as much as you can, whether it be a box, a pylon, a corner, whatever, use it as much as you can. Stay calm. Count the number of bullets your opponent still has, because they're bound to run out if they're in panic mode like you.
Wait for them to reload.
Create a situation where you have the position advantage. Draw them into your kill zone, aka the area that you will anticipate them to be in, so that when they do appear, your cross hair is on or near them already.
Remember what I told you on Vent last night? That is a useful tool, as I have won a few 1 v 1 duels that way.
Also, be aware of your surroundings. Use sounds as much as possible, as you can pin-point an enemy's position with sound alone.

Sound and shaddows are a CS players best friend. Learn to count footsteps, listen for reloads. Look for shaddows on doors and walls. Shoot through doors.
Play deathmatch with pistols only, play against hard bots with very stacked teams. Shoot barrels. All these things will help your reaction time, accuracy, and strategy.

Don't be afraid to prefire corners that people tend to hide in, just don't do it when you are trying to be quiet. If you see an enemy turn a corner after spotting you, dont throw a nade at him, because he will be far enough that you cant reach. Lead with a flashbang and then move in for the kill. Be patient, there is no need to rush in guns blazing by yourself.
